Tutorials Career & Leadership for Tech Architects
The "Why Us?" Question: Researching companies like a pro
On this page
Researching for the Win
If your answer to "Why do you want to work here?" is "Because you have a great culture," you've failed. An Architect's answer should be Technical, Strategic, and Specific.
1. Tech Blog Deep Dive
Read the company's Engineering Blog from the last 6 months. In the interview, say: "I saw your post on how you migrated from Lambda to ECS to save 30% on compute. I've handled similar migrations and I'm excited to apply my experience with K8s to help you scale that further." This shows you are already thinking like a teammate.
2. Financial & Product Alignment
Listen to the last earnings call (if public) or read their latest fundraising press release. Understand their 3-year goal. If they want to expand into AI, and you are an AI Engineer, you aren't just a hire—you are a **Strategic Investment**.
4. Career Mastery
Q: "How do I research a small, stealth-mode startup?"
Architect Answer: "Research the **Founders**. Look at their previous companies and the tech stacks they liked. Look at their investors (VCs)—they often have a 'Type' of company they fund. Then, ask the interviewer: 'I saw the founders have a background in Fintech—is that why you chose Event Sourcing for your core ledger?' This 'reverse-engineering' of their business proves you have incredible technical intuition."
