closest and filter

What is this?

closest(selector) walks up from the element (including itself) to the first match. filter(selector|fn) narrows a collection to matching members.

Why should you care?

Delegated handlers use closest to find the row; filter keeps only .is-error fields before submit.

What happened?

  • closest stops at the first ancestor match.
  • parents(selector) returns all matches.
  • filter can take a function(index, element).

Practice next

  1. Select each row via the button.
  2. Count error rows.
  3. Try .filter(function(){ return $(this).data("sku")==="A1"; }).
  4. closest("form") before serialize.
  5. filter(":visible") for visible rows only.

Remember

closest finds ancestors. filter narrows sets. Great with delegation.

SKU row select

A Udaan B2B QueryVerse catalog picks the table row via closest after icon clicks.

Outcome: data-sku resolves even when the click target is nested.
