parent children find
Setup & DOM ✓ → Events Effects AJAX ✓ → Perf & Integrate → Ship & Projects
Perf & Integrate · 3 — Harden · ~6 min · Traversal and Plugins
What is this?
parent() steps to the immediate parent; children() lists only element children; find() searches all descendants. These three cover most QueryVerse DOM walks.
Why should you care?
From a clicked button you often need the card root, then a nested status span — parent/closest + find.

Run Example »
Edit the code below and click Run to see the result in Toolliyo’s live editor.
What happened?
- children does not deep-search; find does.
- parents() walks all ancestors; prefer closest for a known ancestor selector.
- Avoid find("*") on large trees.
Practice next
- Click Ping and read the output.
- Replace parent() with closest(".card").
- Compare children("div") vs find("span").
- Use .contents() if you need text nodes too.
- Cache $card after closest.
Remember
parent = one step up. children = direct kids. find = descendants.
Order card walk
A Shopify Plus warehouse QueryVerse card reads order id from a nested header after a scan button click.
Outcome: parent/children/find navigate without brittle absolute selectors.
