Lazy Load Images Sketch

Perf & Integrate · 3 — Harden · ~10 min · Performance and Security

What is this?

Lazy loading defers offscreen images until needed. Sketch: mark imgs with data-src, then swap to src when near the viewport using scroll/intersection checks.

Why should you care?

QueryVerse media-heavy catalogs on 4G India networks benefit from fewer eager downloads.

What happened?

  • Prefer native loading="lazy" when browser baseline allows.
  • For legacy, IntersectionObserver beats scroll handlers.
  • Always set width/height to reduce CLS.

Practice next

  1. Simulate enter and watch the image load.
  2. Click again and hit the guard.
  3. Add loading="lazy" as a progressive enhancement.
  4. Use IntersectionObserver in production.
  5. Provide a low-quality placeholder.

Remember

data-src until needed. Native lazy when possible. Reserve image space.

Catalog thumbnails

A Pepperfry merchant QueryVerse catalog lists dozens of product thumbs per page.

Outcome: data-src swap loads images only when the row is needed.
