What is this?

The $ alias is shorthand for jQuery. Other libraries (Prototype, older CMS scripts) may also claim $. jQuery.noConflict() releases $ and returns the jQuery function under a safer name.

Why should you care?

Merged enterprise portals sometimes load two libraries on one QueryVerse screen — noConflict stops $ collisions without deleting jQuery.
