keydown keyup keypress

Setup & DOM ✓Events Effects AJAXPerf & IntegrateShip & Projects

Events Effects AJAX · 2 — Interact · ~6 min · Events

What is this?

keydown fires when a key is pressed (repeats while held); keyup fires on release; keypress is deprecated for most new work — prefer keydown with event.key.

Why should you care?

QueryVerse search boxes and amount fields need Esc to clear, Enter to submit, and digit filters.

What happened?

  • Use event.key (or code) instead of keyCode.
  • PreventDefault for shortcuts carefully so you do not block typing.
  • keypress does not fire for all keys.

Practice next

  1. Type and watch keyup output.
  2. Press Esc to clear.
  3. Hold a key and observe keydown repeat in the console.
  4. Submit on Enter when length > 2.
  5. Allow only digits with keydown filter on an amount field.

Remember

keydown for shortcuts. keyup for after-value reads. Prefer event.key.
