remove and empty
Setup & DOM → Events Effects AJAX → Perf & Integrate → Ship & Projects
Setup & DOM · 1 — Select · ~6 min · DOM Updates
What is this?
remove() deletes the matched elements from the DOM (and their data/events). empty() keeps the element but deletes its children.
Why should you care?
Dismissing alerts vs clearing a list body are different QueryVerse operations — remove vs empty picks the right one.

Run Example »
Edit the code below and click Run to see the result in Toolliyo’s live editor.
What happened?
- detach() is like remove but keeps jQuery data for later reinsert.
- Prefer empty() when the container is reused.
- After remove(), selections of that id return length 0.
Practice next
- Remove the alert and query its length.
- Empty the cart and confirm the ul still exists.
- Re-append a li after empty.
- Use detach on a row, then append it elsewhere.
- Empty #out before writing status.
Remember
remove deletes the node. empty clears children. detach preserves data.
Cart drawer cleanup
A BigBasket B2B QueryVerse drawer must clear line items but keep the
- shell for the next add.
Outcome: empty() clears lines; remove() dismisses the session alert entirely.
