Migrate Away Piecemeal

What is this?

Do not rewrite the whole QueryVerse UI at once. Replace one widget with vanilla or a framework island, keep jQuery elsewhere, and share data via APIs/DOM events.

Why should you care?

Big-bang migrations fail under business pressure; strangler patterns succeed.

What happened?

  • Pick low-risk, high-churn widgets first.
  • Keep CSS contracts stable.
  • Add feature flags.
  • Measure bundle size after each step.

Practice next

  1. Click legacy vs island.
  2. Write a one-feature migration plan.
  3. Identify a your page candidate widget.
  4. Introduce a web component island.
  5. Document “jQuery still owns X”.

Remember

Strangle feature-by-feature. Keep contracts stable. Measure each step.

Strangler migration

A Thoughtworks client QueryVerse starts by replacing only the notification bell with vanilla.

Outcome: A clear piecemeal plan beats a frozen big rewrite.
